Ebastine 10mg Tablets Uses,side Effects

Ebastine (Bastigon) is a potent, long acting and highly selective histamine H1-receptor antagonist. Ebastine, the active ingredient of Bastigon, produces a strong and prolonged selective blocking of the peripheral H1 receptors for histamine. The duration of its action allows administering Bastigon once daily. The drug free from any anticholinergic activity. Since it has no access to central H1 receptor for histamine, it does not show sedative effects. It does not potentiate the effect of alcohol.

Contraindication

Precautions

Since Ebastine reaches its therapeutic effect 1 to 3 hours after administration, it must not be used
in urgent acute allergic cases.

Interaction

A pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic interaction has been observed with ketoconazole or erythromycin. However, no clinically relevant cardiac events have been observed in multicenter double blind clinical trials in patients with allergic rhinitis treated with Ebastine. There is no interaction of Ebastine with Theophylline, Warfarin, Cimetidine, Diazepam or Alcohol.

Warnings

Pregnancy and Lactation : Bastigon should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not
known whether Ebastine is excreted in human milk Therefore, Bastigon should not be used during
lactation.

Use in Children

This drug must not be administered to children under 2 years age. Since safety has not been
established in this age group.

Recommended Dose

Allergic rhinitis: Bastigon, at a dose of 10mg once-a-day is efficacious in the relief of the symptoms
of allergic rhinitis, in patient with more severe symptoms including perennial allergic Rhinitis, 20mg
once-a-day provides additional benefit.

Chronic Urticaria:

The adult dose is one 10mg tablet once daily Bastigon can be taken with or without food.

Effects on ability to drive and use machines:

In man psychomotor function has been investigated extensively and no effect was found at
recommended therapeutic doses.

Side Effects

The most commonly reported side- effect, with Bastigon are as follows:

  • Headache
  • Dry mouth and drowsiness.
  • which were comparable to placebo.
  • Other less commonly reported side effects include pharyngitis.
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dyspepsia
Overdose and Treatment

No clinically meaningful signs or symptoms were observed up to 100mg given once daily. If there is
any sign of intoxication proceed to gastric washing and administration of the appropriate
symptomatic maintenance treatment.
